A third-chair double bassist in a small civic orchestra falls in love with the star mezzo soprano. She is his polar opposite, representing everything he is not: lightness, musicality, beauty, happiness, fame. But, because he is just a lowly bassist, the love of his life never even looks in his direction. Frustrated both musicially and in love, thwarted by an instrument he sees as nothing but a handicap - "humanly, socially, sexually, musically... in traffic!" - he must either accept his place in the musical heirarchy or... find some other way to break out...
